Teaching Measuring with a Ruler
What it is
These pages have the child measure real objects with a ruler in inches or centimeters, including a paper ruler to cut out and use. The measurement is the number where the object ends.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child compares things as longer and shorter and can count to twelve.
If they struggle
Tape the ruler down, or hold it, so it cannot creep while the child reads it, and start the object at the zero mark rather than at the edge of the plastic. Whole units are enough here, so teach the child to say 'about four inches' instead of hunting for exactness. Measuring the same object twice and getting the same number is the check.
