Teaching Counting Small Coins
What it is
These pages keep the amounts small: a handful of pennies, nickels, and dimes making up a few cents. At this size the child can check a total by trading the coins for that many pennies, which is where the idea of coin value starts to make sense.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child recognizes a penny, a nickel, and a dime on sight and can count past twenty-five.
If they struggle
If the child counts every coin as one, start with pennies only, so that counting and value agree. Then add a single nickel and count five, six, seven with the pennies after it. Keep the totals under about twenty-five cents until the child stops counting coins and starts counting value.
