Lesson 2 · Upper Room: Growing Deeper

The Mighty Name of Jesus

God gave His Son a name above every name — the name of Jesus. It is the saving, all-powerful name for God’s people.

Key verse

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,”

Philippians 2:9 · NKJV

The saving name

“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) That name is Jesus (Matthew 1:21).

Do all in His name

“Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Colossians 3:17) The apostles baptized, healed, and prayed in Jesus’ name (Acts 2:38; 3:6).

Every knee will bow

God has “highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” (Philippians 2:9–10)

Work through it

Follow the name through Acts and the letters

Acts 4:12, Philippians 2:10, and Colossians 3:17 are the study references, and Matthew 1:21, Acts 2:38, and Acts 3:6 are quoted in the sections. Read Acts 3 and 4 as one piece: a lame man is healed in the name, Peter is questioned about it, and Acts 4:12 is his answer under examination. That context is the difference between a slogan and a testimony. Then read Philippians 2 from verse 5, so the exaltation follows the humbling as Paul wrote it. Colossians 3:17 is a household instruction sitting in the middle of practical teaching, which is worth seeing, because it applies the name to ordinary life and not to ceremony only.

Where it sits

Second of six in Growing Deeper

Growing Deeper follows the New Believer study with six lessons on Apostolic doctrine. This is the second. It comes after the oneness of God, which is what makes the argument about the name coherent, and before the Word of God. The step it asks for is not an idea but a habit: calling on the name of Jesus in worship, in baptism, and in need. If you are studying with someone else, the printed booklet may be easier to work from — the six lessons download free as a seven-page PDF with a fill-in-the-blank Bible study and a step to take on each one. Read the passages in your own Bible either way; the lesson is a guide into them, not a substitute for them.
