The Oneness of God

The foundation of all truth is that there is one God. He is not three separate persons, but one God who has revealed Himself to us in different ways.

One God

The Scriptures declare that God is one. “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!” (Deuteronomy 6:4). “I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.” (Isaiah 44:6)

God manifest in flesh

This one God came to us in His Son. “God was manifested in the flesh” (1 Timothy 3:16), for “in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9). Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9)

Father, Son, and Spirit

God is Father in creation, Son in redemption, and Holy Spirit dwelling in us — one God, not three. “I and My Father are one.” (John 10:30)

Work through it

Start in Deuteronomy, not in the argument

Deuteronomy 6:4, Isaiah 43:10, and Colossians 2:9 are the study references. Read Deuteronomy 6 from the beginning of the chapter: the confession that the Lord our God is one is given to Israel as the thing to teach their children, which is worth noticing before any conclusion is drawn from it. Isaiah 43:10 and 44:6, quoted above, belong to a run of chapters in which God says repeatedly that there is no God beside Him, so read several of them together. Then read Colossians 2:9 with 1 Timothy 3:16 and John 14:9, the other two verses the lesson quotes. The order matters: the Old Testament statements come first, and the New Testament ones are read in their light.

The opening lesson of the second series

This begins Growing Deeper, six lessons that follow the New Believer study and assume it. They run from the oneness of God to the name of Jesus, the Word of God, the church, the fruit and gifts of the Spirit, and Christ's return. Lesson two takes up the name, which is where this lesson's argument leads. If you have not read the first series, its six lessons on salvation, repentance, baptism, the Holy Ghost, holiness, and growth are the foundation this one is built on. Both series are free to read here, both download as print-ready booklets, and neither asks for an account or an email address. This is doctrine to be checked in Scripture, not a position to be accepted because a page states it.
