Teaching Word Search
What it is
A word search hides words in a grid of letters for the child to find and circle. Each of these puzzles is built around one letter of the alphabet, so every word being hunted begins with the same letter.
When a child is ready
A child is ready once letter shapes are recognized reliably, including the pairs that look alike, such as b and d.
If they struggle
Read the word list aloud first so the child knows what is being hunted. Then look only for the first letter, and check the letters after it before circling. Sliding a card down the grid one row at a time keeps the search orderly instead of random darting.
