Teaching Synonyms and Antonyms
What it is
Synonyms are words with nearly the same meaning (big, large); antonyms are opposites (hot, cold). Knowing both builds vocabulary and more precise writing.
When a child is ready
Teach once the child reads and understands a good range of common words.
If they struggle
Sort word cards into pairs and say why they belong together. For synonyms, ask which word is stronger or more exact (big, huge, enormous) to show that near-synonyms are not identical.
