Teaching Word Puzzles
What it is
These puzzles feature one letter of the alphabet at a time, and the words to be found all begin with that letter. What they build is letter discrimination and steady left-to-right tracking rather than reading itself.
When a child is ready
Use them alongside letter work, once the child knows the featured letter's shape and the sound it makes.
If they struggle
Keep the session short: a puzzle is practice, not a lesson, and a long frustrated hunt teaches nothing. If the child stalls, find one word together and say its sound, then let them find the rest, saying the letter's sound each time a word is circled.
