What it is
Number bonds: a whole and its two parts drawn in circles, so subtraction is seen as finding the missing part rather than a separate operation. In Grade 2: two-digit subtraction; each problem's three numbers then go into a triangle, the whole on top and the two parts below.
When a child is ready
Ready once two-digit subtraction is worked on paper.
If they struggle
After subtracting, add the answer to the number taken away. If the top number comes back, the triangle is right.
