Teaching Letter Formation

What it is

Letter formation is printing each letter the same way every time: where the pencil starts, which way it moves, and where it stops. The letters practiced each week are the spellings being learned in reading that week, followed by a short sentence written with finger spaces.

When a child is ready

Begin once the child holds a pencil with a steady grip and can draw lines and circles on purpose.

If they struggle

Most trouble starts at the wrong starting point: a letter drawn from the bottom up looks right today and slows writing down later. Have the child say the path aloud while tracing, then write three careful letters instead of a full row and circle the best one together.
