There is one page for each day of a thirty-one-day month. Each reading is two short paragraphs, under two hundred words, written in the first person so that a child reads it as their own praise and prayer: I stood still and smiled. God had made a brand new day, and every part of it was full of His care.
The sentences are short and the words are simple, so a young reader can manage a page with a little help and an older one can read it aloud to the family. Nothing on the page needs explaining before you begin. That is what makes it a good first thing in the morning, before the day’s lessons start.
Sixteen walks through creation
The first sixteen pages are morning walks: a meadow at sunrise with dew on the grass, the first light of day, a vegetable garden, a running creek, a window seat with an open Bible, rolling fields, a quiet sky, an orchard, a wildflower path, wind in the tall grass, daybreak, sunrise over the water, the pine woods, a river, the morning after a soft rain and a sunny hill.
Each page is almost all picture, with the reading set into the watercolor scene, and each ends in the same place: thanks to God for a new day, and a wish to walk close to Him through it. They are a gentle way to teach a child that praise can begin simply by noticing what God has made.
Fifteen readings on character
The second half turns from the scenery to the heart. Each page takes one quality and explains it in a child’s terms: The Gift of Blessing, The Joy of Forgiveness, A Heart of Worship, Walking in Grace, Peace in Prayer, The Strength of Faith, Walking in Obedience, The Beauty of Mercy, A Thankful Heart, Hope in the Lord, The Gift of Kindness, Waiting with Patience, Wisdom from Above, Serving with Love and Walking in Truth.
The readings are practical. Obedience shows up in small choices like telling the truth and helping others. Mercy means being gentle and ready to forgive, because God has been merciful to us. Serving is a kind word, a helping hand or sharing what you have, done without expecting thanks, the way Jesus served.
Because each reading stands on its own, you can also choose the one a day calls for: The Joy of Forgiveness after a hard afternoon between brothers and sisters, Waiting with Patience before a long trip, Peace in Prayer on a worried morning, A Thankful Heart on a birthday.
Pair each reading with Scripture
The readings are devotional writing rather than Scripture quotations, so they work best beside an open Bible. A few pairings that follow the themes closely: Psalm 32 or 1 John 1:9 with The Joy of Forgiveness, Philippians 4:6–7 with Peace in Prayer, Hebrews 11 with The Strength of Faith, Psalm 103 with The Beauty of Mercy, Psalm 27:14 with Waiting with Patience, James 3:17 with Wisdom from Above, John 13:1–17 with Serving with Love and 3 John 4 with Walking in Truth.
For the creation walks, Psalm 104 and Psalm 148 read like the same morning. Read the page first, then the psalm, and ask a child which part of the psalm they could see outside the window today.
A five-minute morning routine
Morning Praises work best when the routine around them stays small. Read the page aloud, or let a child who can read take a turn. Pause for a few quiet seconds and look at the picture. Ask one question, and only one. Pray together in a sentence or two, using a phrase from the reading if it helps. Then start the day.
Younger children can point to what they see in the creation paintings: the bird on the fence post, the basket of apples, the stones in the creek. Older children can keep a small notebook and write one line each morning: something they are thankful for, or the word from the reading they want to remember. After a month, that notebook is a record of thirty-one mornings of paying attention to God.
Ways to use them
Read one at breakfast, then ask a single question: what did you notice this morning that God made? Use a favorite sentence as copywork; the free Copywork Creator sets any line at the right size for a child’s handwriting. Read a creation walk before going outside, then take the Creation Observation Walk and see what you find.
In a Sunday school class or a co-op, one page makes a calm opening for the morning. Every page is a single letter-size sheet in full color, and the watercolor pages print well on matte photo paper or cardstock if you want to keep a set in a binder or frame one for a child’s room.
