Lesson 6 · Upper Room Study Guides

Growing in Christ

New life in Jesus is the beginning of a lifelong walk. Like the first church, we grow by devoting ourselves to God’s Word, prayer, worship, and His people.

Key verse

“but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.”

2 Peter 3:18 · NKJV

Devoted together

The early believers continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayers (Acts 2:42). Make God’s Word and prayer daily habits.

Don’t forsake the church

Do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together (Hebrews 10:25). God’s people need each other — to worship, to grow, and to serve.

Keep growing

Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). Be faithful, share your testimony, and keep pressing on.

Work through it

Read Acts 2:42 as a description, not a list

Acts 2:42, Hebrews 10:25, and 2 Peter 3:18 are the study references. Read Acts 2 from verse 41 to the end of the chapter so you see the four things the first believers continued in — the apostles' doctrine, fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayers — as part of a description of how they actually lived rather than as a checklist to complete. Hebrews 10:25 sits inside an exhortation that begins several verses earlier, so read from verse 19 and you will see what the assembling is for. 2 Peter 3:18 is the closing line of the letter, and reading the chapter that leads to it explains why Peter ends there.

Where it leads

The last of six, and a second series after it

Two commitments close the study: a daily time with God in the Word and prayer, and a local church where you attend, serve, and grow. Neither is new by lesson six; both were named in the first church's own habits. This is the final lesson of the New Believer series, and the natural next step is Growing Deeper, which takes up the oneness of God, the name of Jesus, the Word of God, the church, the fruit and gifts of the Spirit, and Christ's return. Both series read free on the site and download as print-ready booklets, with a fill-in-the-blank Bible study on every printed lesson. If you are teaching someone else, the printed version is the easier one to hand across a table.
