Lesson 5 · Upper Room: Growing Deeper

The Fruit and Gifts of the Spirit

The Holy Spirit not only fills us — He changes us and equips us. He grows His fruit in us and gives gifts to serve others.

Key verse

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,”

Galatians 5:22 · NKJV

The fruit of the Spirit

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (Galatians 5:22–23) This is the character of Christ formed in us.

The gifts of the Spirit

“The manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.” (1 Corinthians 12:7) God gives gifts — like wisdom, faith, and healing — to build up the church (1 Corinthians 12:8–11).

Power to witness

“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me.” (Acts 1:8)

Work through it

Fruit in Galatians, gifts in 1 Corinthians

Galatians 5:22, 1 Corinthians 12:7, and Acts 1:8 are the study references, and the lesson keeps the first two apart on purpose. Read Galatians 5 from verse 16 so the fruit stands against the works of the flesh, and notice that fruit is singular — one character described nine ways. Then read 1 Corinthians 12 from verse 4 through verse 11 for the gifts, and notice the reason given for them: the profit of all, not the standing of the person who has them. Acts 1:8 is the last promise recorded before Jesus ascended, so read to the end of the paragraph for what the power was given for.

Where it sits

Fifth of six, and the two halves are not the same

Fruit is grown and gifts are given. The lesson holds that distinction, and it is worth keeping as you read. The step it asks for is daily yielding rather than the pursuit of an experience. This is lesson five of Growing Deeper, after the church — which is where the gifts are exercised — and before the closing lesson on Christ's return. If the Holy Ghost itself is your open question rather than the fruit and the gifts, the fourth lesson of the New Believer study is the one to read first. Both series are free to read here, free to download as print-ready booklets, and both send you back to your own Bible for the passages above.
