Teaching Multiple-Meaning Words and Categories

What it is

Some words carry more than one meaning, and the sentence decides which one is meant: a bat can fly or hit a ball, and bark can be on a tree or come from a dog. These pages also sort words into categories such as animals, foods, and tools, which is how a child files new vocabulary so it can be found again.

When a child is ready

Begin when the child can explain what a familiar word means, and can name two things that belong together and say why.

If they struggle

Draw both meanings of one word side by side, then read a sentence aloud and have the child point to the picture that fits. For the sorting work, name the category before sorting rather than after, and let the child add one word of their own to each group so the category is theirs and not the page's.
