Teaching Word Meaning

What it is

Word meaning work asks a child to say what a word means and to choose the right word for a sentence, not simply to read it. A child can decode harvest perfectly and still not know what it is, and that gap is what these pages are for.

When a child is ready

Start as soon as the child reads or listens to a sentence and can answer a question about what it said.

If they struggle

Give the meaning in words the child already has, then a picture, then the word used in two sentences about the child's own day. Plan to meet the word again later in the week in speech and not only on paper; one worksheet is one meeting with a word.
