Teaching Context Clues

What it is

Context clues are the words and sentences around an unfamiliar word that hint at its meaning, such as a definition, an example, or a contrast.

When a child is ready

Teach it once the child reads sentences fluently enough to think about meaning while reading.

If they struggle

Cover the hard word, read the sentence, and ask what word would make sense. Then uncover it and check. Name the type of clue found so the child learns to look for it.
