Teaching Inference and Evidence
What it is
An inference is a conclusion the reader draws that the writer never stated, and the evidence is the words in the text that support it. The answer is not in the passage, but the reason for it has to be.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child answers stated questions correctly and reads the passage without decoding taking all the effort.
If they struggle
Split the job in two: say what you think, then find the line that made you think it. If no line can be found, the inference is a guess and should be set aside. Having the child mark the supporting sentence with a pencil before writing the answer builds the habit quickly.
