Teaching Read and Recall

What it is

Read and recall means reading a passage and then telling back what it said without looking at it. It shows whether the words were understood as they went past or only pronounced.

When a child is ready

Begin with short passages once the child reads them accurately at a comfortable pace.

If they struggle

Shorten what is read before each retelling: one paragraph, then two. Have the child turn the page over and say it in their own words, then check against the text. If the retelling is only one detail long, ask for the beginning, then the middle, then the end in turn.
