Teaching Main Idea and Details

What it is

The main idea is what a passage is mostly about; the details are the facts and examples that support it.

When a child is ready

Begin with short passages once the child reads them with understanding, not just accuracy.

If they struggle

Ask 'what is this mostly about?' in a few words, then 'how do you know?' The answers to the second question are the details. Sorting sentences into one main idea and several details makes the structure concrete.
