Teaching Summarize and Respond
What it is
A summary is the passage told short: the main point and the few details that carry it, in the child's own words. Responding is saying what the child thinks about it and why.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child can retell a passage fully, since a summary is a retelling with the small parts taken out.
If they struggle
Ask for it in one sentence: somebody wanted something, but something happened, so this was the end. If everything gets included, have the child cross out the details the passage would still make sense without. Keep the summary and the opinion in separate places on the page; blending the two is the usual muddle.
