Teaching Sequence and Cause
What it is
Sequence is the order the events happened in; cause is why one led to the next. A child can list the events in perfect order and still miss what set them off, so the two are practiced together.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child can retell a passage, even roughly, in the order it was read.
If they struggle
Number the events in the margin while reading, then go back and join the pairs where one caused the next. Point out the signal words: first, then, next, after, because. Retelling a familiar routine such as making breakfast gives the shape before it is applied to a text.
