Teaching Subtraction with Regrouping
What it is
Subtraction with regrouping (borrowing) is column subtraction where the top digit is too small, so one ten is broken into ten ones: 42 − 27 = 15.
When a child is ready
Teach it after addition with regrouping and subtraction facts are secure.
If they struggle
Model the trade with blocks: break a ten into ten ones, then subtract. Have the child say 'not enough ones, trade a ten' out loud each time until the written steps match the action.
