Screens vs Paper for Reading Comprehension

Children often comprehend less on screens than on paper — but only for certain kinds of text. What the research actually found, and what it means for your reader.

The short answer: paper has a real advantage — but it’s small, and it depends entirely on what your child is reading. For informational text (the textbook, the article, the thing they’re studying), paper wins consistently, and the gap widens when they’re under time pressure. For stories, the evidence shows no reliable difference at all.

So the honest rule isn’t “screens are bad for reading.” It’s: paper for studying, either one for stories, and watch the device — not the page.

What the research actually found

The headline study, stated accurately

The most-cited work here is a 2018 meta-analysis by Delgado, Vargas, Ackerman and Salmerón, covering studies from 2000–2017 with 171,055 participants

It found a paper advantage: Hedges’ g = −0.21.¹

Two things about that number, and both matter.

First, it’s small. In education research, an effect around 0.2 is a real, detectable, modest difference — not a chasm. Anyone telling you screens destroy comprehension is not describing this study.

Second — and this is the part that gets dropped — it depends on the text. The analysis found three significant moderators:¹

Time frame The paper advantage increased when reading was time-constrained rather than self-paced.
Publication year The paper advantage increased across the years 2000–2017 — it did not fade as devices improved.

That last one is genuinely interesting. Screens got dramatically better over those seventeen years. The gap grew anyway. Whatever’s happening, it isn’t screen resolution.

The finding that complicates it

A 2022 meta-analysis by Schwabe and colleagues looked specifically at narrative texts — 32 studies, 2,239 participants — and found no significant effect of medium on comprehension. It also found that multimedia and interactive features affected comprehension positively

So two meta-analyses agree, and the agreement is the useful part: the medium matters for the textbook. It doesn’t reliably matter for the novel.

What it looks like for young children specifically

A 2021 meta-analysis by Furenes, Kucirkova and Bus examined children ages 1–8 — 39 studies across 30 articles, 1,812 children.³ This one is the most useful for parents, and the most nuanced.

  • Comparing a digital book to a paper book that differed only by being digitized: lower comprehension for the digital version.³
  • But digital books with story-congruent enhancements — features that support the story rather than distract from it — outperformed paper books.³
  • An adult reading a print book with a child was more effective than the enhancements in a digital book the child read independently
  • An embedded dictionary had no or negative effect on story comprehension — but a positive effect on vocabulary learning.³

Read those four findings together and a pattern falls out that is much more useful than “paper good, screen bad.”

What’s actually going on

Put the pieces side by side:

  • The gap shows up on informational text, not stories.
  • It’s worse under time pressure.
  • It grew as screens got better.
  • Distracting digital features hurt; story-supporting ones help.
  • An adult with a paper book beat a child alone with a good app.

None of that points at the screen as a display. It points at something else — most plausibly, what the medium does to how carefully you read.

A screen is the thing you skim on. It’s where you scan, jump, and move fast, because that’s what you do on it a thousand times a day. Paper is slower by default, and studying requires slow. That explains the genre split (stories carry you; textbooks require you to work), the time-pressure result (rushing makes skimming worse), and the year trend (the skimming habit deepened as devices got better).

Which means the finding is about a habit, not a material. That’s better news than “screens are bad,” because habits can be taught.

What to actually do

Paper for studying. Screen is fine for stories. This is the whole rule. If your child is reading to learn — a textbook, an assigned article, anything they’ll be tested on — put it on paper. If they’re reading a novel for pleasure, the evidence doesn’t support fighting about it.

Never let studying happen under time pressure on a screen. That’s the worst combination in the data.¹ If it must be on a screen, make sure it’s unhurried.

For young children, the adult beats the app. The clearest practical finding here: a parent reading a paper book with a child outperformed a child alone with an enhanced digital book.³ If you’re choosing between reading to them and handing them a good reading app, read to them. Judge the features, not the format. Enhancements that serve the story help. Enhancements that distract hurt.³ A digital book with a game attached is not a book. A digital book that just tells the story is fine.

Teach them to read slowly on purpose. This is the real intervention, and it works on any medium. If the gap is a skimming habit, then a child who knows how to slow down deliberately has closed it themselves. Ask what it said. Make them go back. The skill transfers.

Now the thing the research doesn’t measure — and it’s probably the biggest one. Every study above compares a text on paper to the same text on a screen. Nobody’s phone does that. The real device has notifications, a browser, and every app your child owns one tap away. The measured comprehension gap is small. The gap between “reading a book” and “reading a book on a device that periodically offers you something more interesting” was never in these studies at all.

If you take one practical thing: it’s less about paper versus pixels and more about whether the thing they’re reading on can interrupt them.

Saying this accurately

These studies get stretched in both directions, so here’s the careful version — useful if you ever need to explain it to a teacher, a relative, or your own teenager.

  • Screens don’t “destroy” or “damage” comprehension. The measured difference is g = −0.21 on informational text. Real, consistent, small.
  • Children can absolutely learn on screens. Enhanced digital books outperformed paper in one meta-analysis.³
  • The medium does matter — for informational text, consistently, and the effect has grown.¹
  • This isn’t a claim about the brain. These studies measured comprehension scores. They didn’t measure anyone’s brain, and we won’t say they did.

Where faith fits

Scripture doesn’t rule on paper versus pixels, and we won’t pretend it does.

But one thing is worth saying — offered as a judgment, not as a research finding.

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.”

Meditates. That word is the opposite of skimming — and skimming is what all this research keeps circling back to. A child forms a reading posture somewhere. If every text they’ve ever met arrived on a surface built for scanning and moving on, the hard part later won’t be believing the Bible. It’ll be sitting still with it.

That’s not an argument against a Bible app. It’s an argument that your child should get real practice reading slowly and deliberately, with no notification available — and the printed page is simply the easiest place in modern life to get it. (See: Printed Bibles vs Bible Apps for Kids and Teens.)

The bottom line

Paper is better for studying. Stories are a wash. The device — not the page — is the thing to watch. And for a young child, you reading to them beats any app anyone has built.

For narrative text there is no reliable difference. For young children, an adult reading a print book outperforms a child alone with an enhanced digital book, and well-designed digital enhancements can outperform paper. Never claim screens “damage,” “destroy,” or “rewire” anything on the basis of these studies — they measured comprehension scores, not brains.
